Suspected Al-Qaeda Gunmen Kill Five At Yemen Gas Facility

Military forces in Yemen say suspected Al-Qaeda gunmen have killed five Yemeni soldiers guarding a billion-dollar gas facility in the port city of Aden.

The attack took place early on August 11, when the militants infiltrated a checkpoint outside the Balhaf liquefied natural gas terminal, killing a guard and then shooting dead four soldiers as they slept in a cargo container.

The Yemeni government said last week that the Balhaf terminal was believed to be one of two energy facilities that Al-Qaeda militants had been plotting to attack.

The assault comes hours after a U.S. drone strike killed two Al-Qaeda militants in southern Lahj Province.

The United States and other Western countries last week shut down some of their diplomatic missions in the Middle East, including Yemen, after warnings of a terrorist threat.
