The United States military says a top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has been fired after making comments critical of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his government.

A statement from U.S. General John Allen, the commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, said Major General Peter Fuller has been relieved of his duties as deputy commander of the mission to train Afghan national police and army forces.

In a recent interview with the U.S. website Politico, Fuller characterized Afghan leaders as erratic, ungrateful, and "isolated from reality."

The interview quotes him as saying Afghan leaders do not recognize fully America's sacrifices to bring about Afghan stability.

He also criticized President Karzai's recent remarks that Afghanistan would back Pakistan if Pakistan went to war with the United States.

The U.S. statement announcing Fuller's sacking said his comments do not reflect the solid relationship between the U.S. and the Afghan government.
