Paris Confirms Four French Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan

Paris has confirmed that the four international soldiers killed in an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan on June 9 are French troops.

French President Francois Hollande's office said in a statement that an additional five soldiers were also wounded in the attack in Kapisa Province and three are in a serious condition.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in an e-mail to news agencies, saying that a suicide bomber attacked the troops.

France decided last month to speed up the withdrawal of combat forces from Afghanistan, announcing a pull-out of 2,000 troops by the end of the year.
Based on reporting by Reuters, AFP, and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
