Afghan Police Say Three IMU-Linked Commanders Killed

BAGHLAN, Afghanistan -- Police in northern Afghanistan said on December 12 that three militant commanders linked to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan were killed as a result of an overnight police operation in Baghlan Province.

Baghlan police spokesman Ahmad Javed Basharat said the three had been in charge of the Jundullah militant group's military operations in northeastern Afghanistan.

Basharat said one of the commanders, Qari Wali, was responsible for making explosives-laden suicide vests for suicide bombers.

Afghan intelligence officials say the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan operates in Afghanistan under the name Jundullah.

Earlier, Afghan authorities said two key leaders of Jundullah were killed in an air strike in October.

Several people apprehended in Tajikistan have been described by authorities there as members of Jundullah.
