Kyrgyz Opposition Politician To Appeal Fraud Conviction

The leader of the United Kyrgyzstan opposition party, Adakhan Madumarov, told journalists after he was released from a detention center on April 26 that he will appeal his fraud conviction because the case was "ungrounded." In late March, a Bishkek court found Madumarov guilty of financial fraud and ignoring Kyrgyzstan's interests while signing a Kyrgyz-Tajik border deal in 2009 when he led the country's Security Council. The court did not sentence Madumarov due to the statute of limitations but ordered him to remain in custody for another month until the decision takes force. Madumarov was arrested in September.
