Russia Says More Than 10 Militants Killed In Daghestan Raids

Updated

Russia says three suspected militants were killed during a raid by security forces in the North Caucasus republic of Daghestan today.

Police earlier today surrounded a house in the village of Komsomolskoye near the border with Chechnya where the suspected militants were holed up.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said the militants refused to surrender and killed the village administrator, who had tried to persuade them to lay down their arms.

Two policemen were killed in the clash that followed.

The security raid followed the killing on September 12 of a top police official after gunmen ambushed his car in the provincial capital, Makhachkala.

Police then tracked down and killed eight militants who were allegedly involved in the killing.
