Cheney Says No Plans To Close Guantanamo

13 June 2005 -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney says the United States has no plans to close its military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In a television interview to be broadcast today on Fox News, Cheney said that the people who are at Guantanamo are mainly terrorists captured on the battlefield of Afghanistan or rounded up as part of the Al-Qaeda network.

Human rights activists and some U.S. lawmakers want the prison closed, highlighting allegations of torture and abuse of detainees.

U.S. President George W. Bush has said his administration is "exploring all alternatives" for detaining the 540 prisoners. Some of the captives have been held for more than three years without charge.
