Police Clash With Armed Group In Western Kazakhstan


RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports there are ongoing clashes between police and an armed group in Kazakhstan's Aktobe region, in the west of the country.

The police operation against the group was launched after attackers killed two police officers in Shubarshi village.

A spokesman for the regional interior department in Aktobe, Almat Imangaliev, confirmed the operation at a press conference, where he told reporters that it is not known if the attackers are members of a Muslim extremist group.

RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports that in recent years, several Muslim minorities have been imprisoned in Aktobe region for what were described as "terrorist activities."
