The chief of the opposition Communist Party in Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region, Oleg Horjan, was killed at home on July 16, the leader of the Russian Communist Party, Gennady Zyuganov, told a news conference in Moscow on July 17. A party colleague told RFE/RL that Horjan was found dead in his home near Tiraspol with multiple stab wounds, while police said he was shot dead. Horjan was released in December after spending 4 1/2 years in a Transdniester prison.
