Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered a crackdown on police and security service corruption, "regardless of rank or title."
Medvedev's move came after police broke up an illegal gambling ring in the capital Moscow that had allegedly operated for several years with authorities turning a blind eye. Gambling was only legalized in Russia in 2009, and then only in four regions.
Medvedev has called for an urgent meeting with the senior representatives of the security and police forces. He will warn public employees they must not use their official positions to enrich themselves.
Also today, a Kremlin spokeswoman said Medvedev has fired a deputy head of Russia's main security service, Vyacheslav Ushakov, for shortcomings at work and breaching professional ethics.
