A U.S. consular official has been remanded in custody today in the Pakistani city of Lahore after appearing in court for allegedly shooting dead two people who he said wanted to rob him.

Police said the man, identified as Raymond Davis, could be charged with both murder and illegally carrying a weapon in the incident, which occurred on a crowded street on January 27.

Davis apparently told police that he fired in self defense at two men on a motorcycle to prevent what he thought was an attempted robbery.

A third Pakistani man was killed as he was apparently struck by a U.S. consular vehicle that was arriving on the scene to help. Earlier, Pakistani police said charges could be filed in that case as well.

The case could inflame anti-American sentiment in Pakistan, a key U.S. ally in the region.
