Kyrgyzstan Responds To U.S. Letter Expressing Concern Over 'Foreign Representative' Law

Kyrgyzstan has responded to a letter from the United States that reportedly expressed concern over ongoing discussions by Kyrgyz lawmakers of a controversial bill that would allow authorities to register organizations as "foreign representatives," legislation that critics say mirrors repressive Russian laws on "foreign agents." The country's Foreign Ministry said on February 9 that Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev met with the U.S. Ambassador Lesslie Viguerie in Bishkek and handed over a response from President Sadyr Japarov.
