Hungary closed its border with Croatia at midnight October 16 in a bid to stop the flow of migrants who are fleeing Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa.

Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced the closure after a meeting of Hungarian national security officials.

Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said after the announcement that Croatia is "turning the route, the corridor" for migrants and diverting them to Slovenia.

Hungary has already built a razor-wire fence along its borders with Croatia and Serbia in an attempt to stem the flow of migrants arriving in the European Union member state on the so-called Balkan overland route.

Hungary clamped down on its border with Serbia with a similar barrier and closure on September 15.

Since then, migrants have been taking a detour from Serbia through Croatia to reach Hungary.

More than 383,000 migrants have entered Hungary during 2015.

Nearly all are passing through on their way to Germany and other destinations in the EU.
