Hungary's president on March 5 signed the law on Sweden's bid to join NATO, a final technical step before the Nordic country becomes the alliance's 32rd member. A statement on the presidential website said Tamas Sulyok “signed the decision taken by the National Assembly on February 26, 2024, regarding Sweden's membership in NATO." Sulyok signed the bill as his first action as the new president of Hungary. Sulyok became president earlier on March 5 following the resignation last month of Katalin Novak.
