Demonstrators have burned cars and barricaded themselves behind barbed wire inside Cairo's central Tahrir square after troops violently dispersed an overnight protest, killing at least one person and injuring some 70 more.
Armed with sticks and other makeshift weapons, the protesters are vowing not to leave until the head of the military, Field Marshal Mohammed Tantawi, who is Egypt's titular head of state, resigns.
Overnight, Egyptian forces fired into the air and used clubs to disperse several hundred protesters who camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square following the April 8 antigovernment protest, which was the biggest demonstration in more than a month.
The military, which has ruled Egypt since protests toppled President Hosni Mubarak in February, said that police had cleared "outlaws" from the square.
