Hundreds Of Taliban Attack Police In Northeastern Afghanistan

Officials said hundreds of insurgents attacked a police base in Nuristan Province, in Afghanistan's northeast.

The provincial police chief, Aziz Rahman Zahid, said some 400 militants attacked the base near the provincial capital, Parun, early on May 10 and that the fighting was continuing.

Mohammed Zareen, a spokesman for the provincial governor, confirmed a large attack was under way but had no details on the number of insurgents involved.

He said local residents were assisting the police.

There are few NATO and Afghan soldiers in remote Nuristan Province, near the Pakistan border.

Today's attack came two days after more than three dozen Taliban insurgents, including suicide bombers, attacked several government buildings in the southern city of Kandahar.

Four people and all the attackers were killed in the firefight, which lasted more than 30 hours.
