LONDON (Reuters) -- Two British soldiers were killed, while on patrol in the southern Helmand Province of Afghanistan on March 15, the Ministry of Defense has said in a statement.

The two soldiers died after being caught in an explosion in the Garmsir district. They were from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, serving with 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards.

The Ministry of Defense said the families had been informed. Britain has more than 8,000 troops based in Afghanistan, the vast majority serving in Helmand, a desert province that remains a heartland of the Taliban-led insurgency.

The number of British armed forces to die in Afghanistan since the conflict began has now reached 152.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
