Interim President Jakup Krasniqi today announced snap elections for Kosovo on December 12 after parliament backed a no-confidence motion, bringing down the government that led the country to independence from Serbia in 2008.

The vote followed a decision by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci's main coalition partner, the Democratic League of Kosovo, to leave the government in late September following the resignation of its leader Fatmir Sejdiu as Kosovo's president.

Thaci welcomed the vote as an act that "will lead Kosovo out of an institutional crisis."

According to the Kosovo Constitution, passing a no-confidence vote triggers snap elections to be held within 45 days.
