British Troops Kill Afghan Woman In Car Accident

Updated

Afghan police say British troops killed one Afghan woman in a car accident in Kabul today.

A spokesman for Kabul police, Hashmat Stanekzai, said information he had initially given out -- that two women and a man had been killed -- was the result of "miscommunication between security forces."

A spokesman for NATO-led troops confirmed there had been an accident involving some coalition soldiers but declined further comment, saying they were still investigating.

Civilian deaths are a volatile issue in Afghanistan, and today's accident also comes at a time of heightened anti-Western sentiment over the burning of a copy of the Koran by a small church in the U.S. state of Florida, which has sparked days of protests across Afghanistan.
