Syria Asks UN To Investigate Alleged Chemical Attack

The Syrian government says it has asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to investigate an alleged chemical attack by rebels in northern Syria.

Syria's UN ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said Wednesday the government had asked Ban to form an independent commission to investigate the alleged attack.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said the UN had not received a formal request.

The Syrian government and rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad's regime accuse each other of carrying out the deadly chemical attack on March 19, and the opposition Syrian National Coalition also called for an international probe.

U.S. and European officials say there is no evidence to suggest there was such an attack.

After initially backing the government claim, Russia said on March 20 there was no clear evidence proving the use of chemical weapons.

Based on reporting by AFP and Reuters

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
