Iran Yet To Decide On Iraq Conference Participation

April 9, 2007 -- Iran says it has yet to decide on whether to attend a high-level conference on Iraq's security to be held in May.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Reza Baqeri today was quoted by the Fars News Agency as saying that "Iran has not yet decided" but will announce a decision "in due course."

The ministerial-level meeting of countries neighbouring Iraq and world powers will be held in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on May 3-4.

Baqeri said Iran wants the conference to be held in Iraq.

A regional security meeting on Iraq that was hailed as a "good first step" -- and which included participation by U.S., Iranian, and Syrian representatives -- was held in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone on March 10.
