August 6, 2006 -- Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, today said Iran will expand its nuclear fuel work whenever it wants to, but only under UN inspections.
"We will expand nuclear technology at whatever stage it may be necessary and all of Iran's nuclear technology, including the [centrifuge] cascades, will be expanded," Larijani said.
The cascade process can be used to enrich uranium to weapons-grade standards.
Larijani also rejected a recent UN resolution demanding an end to Iran's uranium enrichment.
The resolution gives Iran until August 31 to halt its nuclear work or face possible sanctions. Tehran says the resolution has no legal basis.
The United States accuses Iran of covertly seeking to develop nuclear arms. Iran denies the charge.
