The head of Afghanistan's Independent Elections Commission says the body is reassessing the vote count from some 2,000 polling stations amid candidate charges of fraud.
In an exclusive interview with RFE/RL, Ahmed Yousuf Nuristani said on June 30 that the recount at the 1,900 polling stations in 30 provinces is intended "to restore transparency and fairness."
He said the reassessment could take four to five days.
Nuristani also said the commission has not yet decided whether to announce partial results on July 2, or to wait for the outcome of the reassessment.
Preliminary official election results have been widely expected on July 2, with the final results scheduled for July 22.
Abdullah Abdullah, a former foreign minister, faced ex-Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani in the June 14 runoff vote.
