SAR-E POL, Afghanistan -- The owner of an Afghan radio network dedicated solely to women says one of its regional stations has been reopened after it was controversially shut down two weeks ago.
Shafiqullah Azizi, the owner of the "Voice of Women" network, told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan that its regional office in Sar-e-Pol Province was back on the air on August 2.
Its reopening came two days after Azizi claimed the local station had been shut when he refused to pay $400 in bribes to officials at the provincial Information and Cultural Affairs Department.
Local officials refuted his claims, insisting the station was closed because it lacked proper permits.
Azizi had taken the case to the provincial governor.
The station broadcasts 12 hours of programming on women’s issues in the Dari, Pashto, and Uzbek languages.
