At least 11 civilians were killed and 28 more wounded when a roadside bomb hit a bus in Afghanistan’s Zabul Province, the Interior Ministry said on May 10.

Women and children were among the casualties.

No group claimed responsibility for the blast, which occurred overnight as the passenger bus was traveling from Kabul to Kandahar.

The Interior Ministry blamed the Taliban for placing the bomb.

The blast came as the militant group announced it would declare a three-day cease-fire for the religious holiday of Eid al-Fitr later this week.

Violence in Afghanistan has been rising sharply in recent weeks after the United States said it would withdraw its troops by September 11.
