British Prime Minister David Cameron has met with Iran's President Hassan Rohani at the United Nations -- the first meeting between the countries' leaders since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The meeting took place as the UN General Assembly got under way on September 24.

Cameron and Rouhani noted the threat posed to the region by the Islamic State militant group and "agreed that all states in the region must do more" to cut support for terrorist groups.

A picture was later posted on a Twitter account in Rohani's name showing the Iranian president as he shook hands with Cameron.

Cameron is due to address the General Assembly later on September 24 and Rohani will do so on September 25.

The gathering comes amid a U.S.-led international air campaign against the Islamic State extremist group, which holds large swaths of Iraq and Syria.
