EU To Give Fresh Aid To Afghan Refugees


Afghan refugees in Pakistan (file photo) (official site) 25 January 2006 -- The European Commission says it will release another 20 million euros ($24.5 million) in humanitarian aid to Afghan refugees still living in Pakistan and Iran.


Some will also go to Afghan refugees who have since returned home.


The money, which will be funneled through the European Union's humanitarian aid office, ECHO, will be spent on shelter, health, water, and sanitation projects as well as to transport and provide security for aid workers.


Three million Afghan refugees still live in Pakistan. Another million are still in Iran.
