Earthquake Rattles Afghanistan

(RFE/RL) 13 December 2005 -- A strong earthquake was reported in the early morning in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measured magnitude 6.7.

Reports said the quake was felt as far away as the Indian capital New Delhi and the Pakistani city of Peshawar. The Afghan capital Kabul also reported tremors.

No reports so far of damages or casualties. People in many affected areas, however, fled their homes in fear.

Two months ago, a devastating earthquake killed at least 87,000 people in northwestern Pakistan and Indian Kashmir.
