Afghanistan Welcomes Extradition Of 14 Suspected Taliban

(RFE/RL) 27 October 2005 -- Afghan officials have welcomed the extradition of 14 suspected Taliban members from Pakistan to Afghanistan.

The 14 men were extradited on 26 October. Afghan state television showed footage of soldiers leading them, all blindfolded, off a military transport plane at the airport in Kabul.

An Afghan presidential spokesman yesterday said Abdul Latif Hakimi, the ousted militia's one-time spokesman who was captured in Pakistan this month, was among those handed over.

Interior Ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanezai on 27 October said the extradition was a "positive development" between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said Afghanistan hoped it would help in the "war against terrorism."
