Turkish PM Promises Kurds More Rights, Prosperity

12 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged today that all problems in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast will be resolved with "more democracy, more civil rights and more prosperity."

Speaking in the city of Diyarbakir, Erdogan said "there will be no going back from the point Turkey has come to."

Kurdish rebels have increased violence over the past months, raising concern that Ankara might introduce measures against the Kurdish minority.
